Last month, we had the opportunity to sit down with Llanelli MP Dame Nia Griffith to discuss the vital role of government initiatives like the ECO4 and Great British Insulation Schemes (GBIS) in the current cost of living and energy crises. The conversation highlighted key opportunities and challenges for the future of energy efficiency and renewable energy, not just from an environmental standpoint, but also from a social and financial perspective, on an individual household level.

During the discussion, Dame Griffith emphasised the importance of refining existing schemes to ensure no household is left behind; “We need providers like Stellar Energy to help identify gaps where people aren’t eligible but should be, or where certain upgrades aren’t currently covered”. We hope that collaboration endeavours like this one, between ourselves and local government, can work to ensure that government initiatives continue to evolve and meet the needs of wider populations.

One of the biggest challenges to the success of energy efficiency schemes is actually making the public aware of the options available to them; to upgrade their homes for free under schemes like these. Nia expressed her enthusiasm and highlighted the importance of efforts to increase public awareness about schemes like ECO4 and GBIS. She noted that “We need to make sure organizations working with people have the right information to encourage participation”. She noted that “Many existing skills, like plumbing and electrical work, can be easily transferred with short conversion courses”.

According to Dame Griffith, Labour is exploring partnerships with colleges and developing apprenticeship programs to address the skills gap identified in the green energy space. Initiatives like the Cyfle – a shared apprenticeship scheme – were highlighted as successful models for providing hands-on experience across sectors, namely in renewable energy.

This reflects our view on the industry too: the current and prospective workforce is in need of more vocational training to create a pipeline of skilled workers ready to tackle and overcome the challenges of energy efficiency.

New research from epIMS, the energy efficiency platform for landlords, reveals promising progress in the energy performance of homes across England and Wales. Between Q4 2023 and Q3 2024, 60.2% of homes sold, let, or constructed achieved an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of C or above. This marks a 1.6% increase compared to the previous year, highlighting growing awareness of energy efficiency among buyers, tenants, and developers.

Regional Highlights

London led the way, with an impressive 64% of homes attaining an EPC rating of C or higher. Other strong performers included:

– North East: 61.8%
– South East: 61.5%
– North West: 61.5%
– East of England: 61.4%

Why Energy Efficiency Matters More Than Ever

This upward trend in EPC ratings aligns with growing recognition of the importance of energy efficiency. In addition to reducing carbon footprints, energy-efficient homes help lower utility bills—a critical factor for many households amid fluctuating energy prices.

Financial institutions are also taking notice. For instance, Halifax has started factoring EPC ratings into mortgage affordability calculations, reflecting the impact of utility costs on living expenses and household budgets. This shift underscores the increasing significance of energy performance in property decisions for both buyers and tenants.

As awareness of energy efficiency continues to grow, we can expect even greater focus on improving EPC ratings in the coming years. Whether through retrofitting existing homes or constructing new energy-efficient properties, this trend is set to shape the housing market for the better.
